VTT gets National Centre of Excellence in the field of white biotechnology and green chemistry
13.12.2006
Academy of Finland has selected VTT's 'White Biotechnology/Green Chemistry' as one of the 18 centres of excellence in the national CoE programme 2008 - 2013. The centre develops novel methods in biotechnology and chemistry that can be utilised for producing chemicals, materials, and fuels from renewable resources.
The opportunities of so-called 'white biotechnology' combined with the methods
of the environmentally-friendly 'green chemistry' play an important role in
developing sustainable, energy-efficient production processes. For several
decades, VTT has been in the frontline developing basic knowledge and
technology based on renewable resources. The Centre of Excellence combines
VTT's internationally top-level know-how in biotechnology, chemistry, system
biotechnology and engineering sciences.
The centre is led by Research Professor Merja Penttilä. 40 researchers from several knowledge centres in the VTT clusters of Biotechnology, Energy and Pulp&paper, and Microtechnologies and sensors are employed in the Centre of Excellence.
