ESA launched satellites investigating the evolution of the universe
The European Space Agency (ESA)  launched two scientific satellites, Planck and Herschel, in May. The satellites will help scientists to investigate the structure of the universe and the formation of stars and galaxies. Finnish enterprises and scientists have made a significant contribution to the development of the satellites.
New EEG trace interpretation method predicts neurological recovery of cardiac arrest patients
Miikka Ermes (M.Sc., Eng.), Research Scientist from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will publicly defend his doctoral thesis presenting methods for analysing human biosignals on 15 May 2009, including innovative methods for the verification of brain damage following cardiac arrest. Up until now, the use of electroencephalography (EEG) in the monitoring of cardiac patients has been limited due to interpretation difficulties.

A tool from VTT and Rapal for reducing the carbon footprint of properties
Office premises cause a significant part of society's environmental effects. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a tool together with Rapal Oy that can be used to determine the environmental load caused by various premise solutions. The calculator helps to set objectives and monitor results simultaneously with respect to both finance and environmental impacts, and supports property management that is in accordance with sustainable development.
