Sahlgrenska University Hospital
SE-413 45 Göteborg

University of Gothenburg is the largest university in Scandinavia. The Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg has a long-standing focus and a strong international reputation in metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.

Team leader Dr. Fredrik Bäckhed aims to identify novel therapeutic and diagnostic targets for the metabolic syndrome by focusing on the role of the gut microbiota, using a highly interdisciplinary research approach to unravel how the gut microbial community affects lipid metabolism and inflammation. The team currently consist of 8 members and maintains a gnotobiotic facility at UGOT. The group which was started in mid 2006 is an interdisciplinary team with core competencies in biochemistry, molecular biology, functional genomics, physiology, and gnotobiology.
