The Federico II University of Naples, founded in 1224 by the Emperor Federico II, is at present the largest University in Italy in terms of students' number: 94436. The Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine has 24 professors, 28 researchers and 196 technicians. The scientific activity of the Department is basically oriented towards the study of the prevention and treatment of chronic degenerative diseases. Within the Department, the Unit of Diabetes and Metabolism focuses its research activities on three fields: diet and diabetes mellitus, lipoprotein metabolism, the insulin resistance syndrome.

The ETHERPATHS project will be performed in the Unit of Diabetes and Metabolism. This group consists of 12 members. The Unit is located within the University Hospital and has clinical responsibility of in- and out- patients. Within the Unit a metabolic kitchen to prepare and store foods is available, together with a metabolic ward and a clinical laboratory to measure relevant parameters of glucose and lipoprotein metabolism. The Diabetes and Metabolism Unit has large experience in nutrition interventions in humans and has participated in many international cooperative research activities in the field of nutrition and metabolic diseases.
