Sensor solutions for energy efficient production
On-line measurement of emissions using various optical measurements in energy plants makes it possible to maintain optimal burning conditions depending on the contents of the fuel material. Condition monitoring of critical machines using various process-specific sensors enable both on-line monitoring as well as predictive measurements which help to avoid down times and to optimise maintenance breaks. VTT develops solar cell technology using roll-to-roll manufacturing technology which is well suited for large-area solar panels.

Energy-efficient transport
VTT provides intelligent accumulator solutions for monitoring electronics which is critical for electrical and hybrid vehicles. Energy-efficient smart grids exploit sophisticated ICT solutions to optimise the use of electricity, to avoid peaks in the demand of electricity, and to make grids bidirectional thus allowing distributed energy production.

Energy efficient lighting and housing
The new LED technology can be used to markedly increase the energy efficiency of lighting. Efficiency depends on the diodes, their driving circuits, packaging of the lighting modules, and the control of lighting. VTT has circuit technology that improves the efficiency of the driving circuits, packaging technology which improves the thermal management of lighting modules resulting in increased energy efficiency and life time, and control solutions to use lighting only when needed. VTT solutions can be used to prevent excessive air conditioning, for example by using distributed temperature and air quality (such as CO2) measurements.
