Global climate change mitigation will call for strong measures in order to achieve deep reductions, up to 80 % of greenhouse gases in industrial countries. Technology development and enhanced market implementation of new technologies will be one of the most cost efficient global tools. VTT is one of the largest R&D actors in Northern Europe in the area of green and sustainable energy. The selected focus areas are advanced bioenergy, wind and fuel cells in renewable energy, nuclear energy and clean coal in sustainable energy production. A strong focus is also in the efficient use of energy in transport, the built environment and industry. Technology development is linked to energy systems, modelling, economic assessments, foresighting and services in all stages of the innovation process from technology and market commercialization. A new energy revolution is needed, the transition to a green and sustainable world is more urgent than ever.

Green energy solutions will call for leaping technology developments and market introduction of all renewable energy sources. The International Energy Agency IEA has indicated that in 2050 up to 50 % of primary energy sources can be produced by renewable energy. The targets are set in Europe by 2020 to increase the share of renewable energy to 20 % in final energy consumption, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 % and increase the efficient use of energy by

20 %. No single technology provides the final solution, we need all sources and applications of green energy. The decarbonisation of the power and transport sectors is a top priority. A global green energy revolution will call for accelerated efforts, measures and results from energy research and development.

VTT’s scientific and technological focus on green energy technology
VTT develops new solutions in bioenergy, wind, fuel cell and solar photovoltaic applications. VTT focuses on development of new, cost competitive solutions for power, heat and transport supported by competence in energy systems, modelling, sustainability and market assessments. New wind power solutions, often in ice conditions, are under strong development and implementation phases. VTT provides solutions in smart grid development and innovations to achieve large scale renewable electricity generation.

New technologies developed for forest and agrobiomass value chains are main focuses on VTT’s research agenda. A unique research infrastructure with pilot plant facilities supports our RTD (research and technical development) activities. Combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, hydrogenation and high pressure processes are typical competence areas. Fuel cell research is strongly focused on applications with new materials. Energy-efficiency and the use of renewable energy are key topics for sustainable transport. Activities cover RTD as well as large-scale fleet demonstrations. Biotechnology will open new integrated solutions also in the energy RTD, such as next generation biofuels and algae based bioenergy.

Wind power
VTT provides solutions for fast growing wind park markets. Special expertise is developed for reliable operations in ice conditions, not only seen in the arctic areas. New results from material and construction research will offer cost competitive solutions.

Fuel cell
VTT develops solutions for clean power production based on SOFC (solid oxide fuel cells) technology as well as new fuel cell based power trains for speciality vehicles. Both technologies offer high efficiencies which results in savings in fuels as well as reduced CO2 emissions, both for power production and transport. VTT offers system development and concept verification, as well as development of components and materials. VTT’s offerings also include developing other fuel cell applications like portable and small power sources.
